In previous posts, I have discussed how trauma can continue to affect the brain and nervous system long after a difficult experience has ended. One of the most confusing parts of trauma is this: you may know you’re safe, yet your body continues to react as though you’re in danger.
Many people tell me, “I know nothing bad is happening, but I still feel anxious,” or “I can’t seem to relax, even at home.” They often wonder why understanding what’s happening isn’t enough to make the feelings go away.
The answer lies in how the brain and nervous system respond to trauma. Feeling safe isn’t determined by logic alone. It’s also influenced by the parts of the brain responsible for detecting threat and keeping us alive.
“If I understand what’s happening, why do I still feel this way?”
If trauma can change the way the brain and nervous system respond to danger, can those changes be reversed?
Research suggests that, for many people, the answer is yes. While we can’t erase difficult experiences, the brain remains capable of adapting throughout life—a process known as neuroplasticity. This means the brain can develop new patterns and connections in response to repeated experiences, including experiences of safety, regulation, and healthy relationships.
Healing doesn’t happen simply because we tell ourselves we’re safe. It happens gradually as the nervous system begins to experience safety often enough that it no longer needs to remain on constant alert.
This process is sometimes called nervous system regulation. Rather than eliminating stress altogether, regulation refers to the ability to respond to life’s challenges and then return to a calmer, more balanced state. As regulation improves, many people notice they recover more quickly from stress, feel less overwhelmed by everyday situations, and become more present in their relationships and daily lives.
Therapy can support this process in different ways. For some people, learning practical coping skills, understanding emotional patterns, or strengthening relationships provides an important foundation for healing. Others may benefit from therapies that directly target how traumatic memories and stress responses are processed.
For example, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy that helps many people process distressing memories so they become less emotionally and physically activating over time. Rather than erasing memories, EMDR aims to help the brain integrate them in a way that reduces their ongoing impact.
Another approach, neurofeedback, focuses on helping the brain develop more balanced patterns of activity through real-time feedback. Although research continues to evolve, studies suggest neurofeedback may be helpful for some individuals experiencing symptoms related to trauma, anxiety, or difficulties with emotional regulation. It is generally considered one of several therapeutic options that may be appropriate depending on a person’s needs and goals.
There is no single treatment that works for everyone. Healing is often most effective when therapy is individualized, taking into account a person’s history, current challenges, strengths, and preferences. The goal is not to “fix” someone, but to help the brain and nervous system learn that the danger has passed and that it is possible to respond differently to the present.
Insight isn’t always enough
Trauma affects the brain and nervous system, not just thoughts. Understanding your reactions is an important first step, but it doesn’t automatically change how the nervous system responds.
